Website prices are difficult to compare because the scope and ongoing responsibilities vary. A low upfront fee tells you little about the cost over a year or the work you will do yourself.
Compare the same outcome
Write the pages, forms, booking or payment features, content help, maintenance, and response times you need. Ask every provider to price that scope. A simple brochure site and a custom store are different purchases.
Build a one-year and a three-year view. Include domain renewals, hosting, software subscriptions, edits, email, taxes, and optional services. Record who owns each account.
DIY: fewer upfront dollars, more of your time
A DIY builder may suit someone who wants editing control and has time to learn. Count setup, copywriting, mobile checks, form testing, and ongoing changes. A price shown for annual billing may not be the month-to-month price.
The time value in our estimator is an opportunity-cost scenario. It is not an extra bill. If you enjoy the work and have spare time, your decision may differ from someone whose evenings are already full.
Agency: check the exact deliverables
Agency work can include research, design, copy, technical features, and ongoing support. Request a written scope and a payment schedule. The $3,000–$20,000 range used in our example is a planning range supplied in the site brief, not an independently researched market average.
Free build: understand the hosting model
This site is operated by the team behind one of the services we recommend. The team also operates the free-build service linked here and benefits if you become a hosting customer. Read our disclosures.
The free design and build option linked here lists paid hosting from $50 per month. That is $600 over twelve months before domains or extras. It may fit a business that values ongoing help, but it is not a website with zero lifetime cost.
Check current pricing, cancellation notice, editing allowances, and how you can buy out or move the site. Ownership of your brand and content is different from portability of the hosted code.
